Traffic between Quetta and Karachi was suspended on Wednesday after members of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) blocked the RCD Highway in Khuzdar to protest the disappearance of Mir Yousaf Ali Khan Qalandrani. The protest began in the Sunny area of Khuzdar and is scheduled to continue until authorities produce Qalandrani, who has been missing since his detention in Karachi on August 17, 2025. The blockade has led to long queues of passenger buses and freight trucks stranded on both sides of the highway, disrupting transportation and trade.
The demonstration is being led by JUI leader Maulana Qamar-ud-deen, with the participation of Ali Muhammad Qalandrani, the chief of the Qalandrani tribe, along with district representatives, tribal elders, and a large number of party workers. Protesters have stated that they will not end the blockade until the authorities reveal the whereabouts of Qalandrani. The intensifying protests reflect mounting frustration and anger among the local population over the enforced disappearance.
Mir Yousaf Qalandrani, a resident of Tootak in Khuzdar, was reportedly detained in Karachi and has since gone missing. His family and supporters allege that he has been subjected to enforced disappearance, a claim that has added to the ongoing tensions in the region. The disappearance has sparked widespread concern and outrage among residents, who see it as part of a pattern of targeted actions against the Qalandrani family.
Historically, the Qalandrani family has faced similar targeting by Pakistani security forces. On February 18, 2011, troops surrounded Tootak village and conducted hours-long house-to-house searches, detaining all male residents. While some were released afterward, three of Yousaf Qalandrani’s brothers, along with his 82-year-old relative Muhammad Rahim Khan Qalandrani and 16 other family members, remain missing to this day. These incidents have contributed to deep-seated mistrust and resentment within the community.
The recent disappearance and subsequent protests have reignited longstanding grievances in Khuzdar. Tribal representatives and local residents accuse authorities of targeting the Qalandrani family for years, highlighting a continued pattern of enforced disappearances and political repression. The ongoing blockade and unrest underscore the fragile security situation in the region and the urgent need for accountability and transparency regarding the missing individuals.
