Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti announced that Pakistani security forces thwarted a major attack by apprehending a woman believed to be preparing for a suicide bombing.
During a press conference in Quetta on Monday, Bugti displayed a young woman before the media, claiming she had been assigned a “suicide mission” targeting a location in Islamabad. He stated that intelligence agencies intervened just in time to prevent the planned attack.
Bugti identified the woman as being from Turbat district in Balochistan and alleged she had received training at a militant camp. He also claimed that she had been coerced and pressured into participating in the attack. The chief minister said, “We are handing her over to her father.”
However, local sources and activists have identified the woman as Hair Nisa Waheed, who they say had previously gone missing from Hub Chowki in Balochistan. According to local accounts, Pakistani security forces raided a house in the Ganji Ghot area near Daro Hotel in Hub Chowki in the early hours of December 20 last year. During the operation, two women, Hair Nisa Waheed and Hani, were reportedly detained.
Family members and local residents report that Hani was released on January 26, but Hair Nisa remained missing until she appeared at the press conference in Quetta.
Reports also indicate that two young men from Turbat, Mujahid and Fareed, were detained during the same operation.
This case has reignited debates in Balochistan over enforced disappearances and the practice of publicizing detainees involved in counter-terrorism efforts. Human rights organizations and local observers have previously criticized what they call “media trials,” where women who were earlier reported missing are later presented publicly as suspects.
Similar cases have surfaced in recent years. For instance, Farzana Zehri from Khuzdar was allegedly subjected to enforced disappearance before being publicly presented as a suicide bomber in a government-organized press conference.
Another notable case involves Rahima Bibi from Dalbandin, who was detained along with her brother during a raid on their home and later shown as an alleged facilitator of a suicide attack after months in custody.
There is also the case of Mahal Baloch, who was previously portrayed by the Balochistan government as a suicide bomber but was eventually acquitted and released after court proceedings.
