The Balochistan Home Department has extended the detention of Shah Ji Sibghatullah, a prominent leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), for an additional 30 days. This marks the third consecutive extension of his detention under the Balochistan Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance. The ongoing detention highlights the authorities’ continued efforts to control political activists in the region.
An official notification issued on 27 May 2025 confirms that Sibghatullah, son of Maulvi Abdul Haq, will remain in custody under Section 3 of the MPO. Authorities justify his detention by claiming that he poses a threat to public safety in Quetta district. They allege that he has been inciting unrest and encouraging acts that could lead to violence or damage to government property.
Sibghatullah was initially arrested in early April by Pakistani security forces and was held at an undisclosed location before being transferred to Hudda Jail under the MPO. Since his arrest, his detention has been repeatedly extended, with authorities maintaining that his continued incarceration is necessary for maintaining order and security.
Other leaders of the BYC, such as Dr. Mahrang Baloch, Bebagr Zehri, Beebow Baloch, and Gulzadi Baloch—are also in custody under the same legal provisions. Several court petitions seeking their release have been dismissed, further consolidating the authorities’ stance on detaining political activists under the MPO.
According to Sibghatullah’s family, during a jail visit, he reportedly stated that he was offered conditional release if he agreed to cease political activities, sit-ins, and protests. Sibghatullah refused this deal, reaffirming his commitment to his political stance and opposition to restrictions on his activism.
The BYC has responded strongly to the continued detentions, criticizing the judiciary for what they perceive as a loss of independence. The group accused the Balochistan High Court of being powerless against executive influence and claimed that the MPO abuses the legal system as a tool for political vengeance.
Last month, a two-member bench of the Balochistan High Court dismissed petitions filed by the detained BYC leaders. The group emphasized that it is the judiciary’s constitutional duty to remain independent and to provide justice without interference from intelligence agencies or the military. Rights groups have expressed concern over the prolonged detentions, viewing them as a serious threat to civil liberties and political expression in Balochistan.
