Amnesty International has disclosed that Iranian security forces engaged in the rape and sexual assault of women and men are detained during the government’s crackdown on nationwide protests that commenced in September 2022.
As reported by AFP, Amnesty documented 45 instances of rape, gang rape, or sexual violence against protestors in its recent findings. Dr. Agnès Callamard, the Secretary-General of Amnesty, stated that the investigation exposed how intelligence and security agents in Iran utilized rape and sexual violence as punitive measures against protesters.
The London-based organization conveyed this information to Iranian officials on November 24, but as of now, there has been no response.
The protests in Iran began in September 2022 following the death of Mehsa Amini, a 22-year-old who died in police custody. The government’s severe crackdown led to the waning of the protest movement by the end of the year.
Human rights organizations estimate that hundreds were killed, and thousands were arrested during the protests. Amnesty’s report disclosed that among the 45 cases, 16 involved rape, affecting six women, seven men, a 14-year-old girl, and two boys aged 16 and 17. The report added that six women and two men were subjected to gang rape by approximately 10 male agents.
The perpetrators, according to the report, included Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Basij Force, Intelligence Ministry agents, and police officers. Evidence was gathered through interviews with victims and witnesses.
One victim, Maryam, arrested for not wearing a headscarf during the protests, recounted being raped by two agents during interrogation. Another victim, Farzad, reported being gang-raped along with another man, Shahid, by plainclothes agents. Many victims refrained from filing complaints due to fear of reprisals, and those who did were allegedly ignored by prosecutors.
Dr. Agnès Callamard emphasized that in the absence of local justice, the international community has a responsibility to support victims and pursue justice.
