In 2024, a staggering 82 miners lost their lives in 48 coal mine accidents across Balochistan, revealing the critical safety concerns plaguing the industry.
Official records from the Minerals Department indicate that these incidents ranging from toxic gas leaks and landslides to trolley collisions occurred throughout the year, from January to December 27, across various coal-mining regions. In addition to the fatalities, more than 60 miners suffered injuries.
Dukki, Shahrag, Machh, and Quetta were identified as the most affected areas, with Shahrag alone reporting 20 incidents that resulted in the deaths of 37 workers.
Authorities have stated that investigations were launched into six major accidents, culminating in legal action against three officials from the department. According to reports, negligence charges have been filed and arrests made.
The recurring fatalities highlight the pressing need for enhanced safety measures to safeguard the lives of coal mine workers in Balochistan.
