The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) on Sunday expressed concerns over what it described as intensified “institutional repression” in Balochistan over the past year. The group highlighted that several of its central leaders have completed twelve months in detention, emphasizing the ongoing crackdown on political activists in the region.
In a detailed statement, the BYC identified Dr. Mahrang Baloch, Beebarg Baloch, Sebghatullah Shah Ji, Gulzadi Baloch, and Beebow Baloch as individuals who have remained imprisoned for a year. The committee pointed out that the issue extends beyond the detention of a few individuals, reflecting what it called an “institutional alignment” aimed at suppressing an unarmed political movement in Balochistan.
The group accused the military, intelligence agencies, and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of being “central actors” in what they described as organized repression. They alleged that in 2025 and 2026, thousands of cases were registered where counterterrorism provisions were exploited as a means to silence political dissent and suppress protest.
Furthermore, the BYC criticized the lack of progress in criminalizing enforced disappearances despite calls from the United Nations and international human rights organizations. Instead of addressing the issue, the authorities were accused of introducing measures like “de-radicalisation centres” that serve as a cover for unlawful detention and enforced disappearances.
The statement also condemned the role of the judiciary, claiming that courts have legitimized what they termed “politically motivated cases.” The BYC said that its leaders were initially detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law and later faced what they described as false terrorism charges, which they viewed as part of a broader effort to criminalize legitimate political activism.
Additionally, the BYC criticized Pakistan’s national media, accusing it of becoming “a primary instrument” of the state narrative. They argued that peaceful political activists are being portrayed as terrorists or facilitators through what they called “organized propaganda,” used to justify repression and silence dissenting voices.
The committee called for several urgent measures, including declaring enforced disappearances a serious crime and establishing an independent commission to investigate such cases. They also demanded the restoration of judicial independence and the lifting of what they described as an undeclared media blackout in Balochistan, which they said hampers the flow of information and accountability.
Pakistani authorities did not immediately respond to the allegations and accusations made by the BYC in their statement.
