Greta Thunberg, the internationally acclaimed climate activist, has brought attention to the prolonged oppression faced by the Baloch in Pakistan, a situation she claims has endured for more than seven decades. Recently, she shared a video featuring Dr. Mahrang Baloch on her Instagram, reaching her more than 14 million followers, to spotlight the persistent injustices experienced by the Baloch community.
In her post, Thunberg detailed various forms of state oppression, such as the displacement of indigenous communities, extrajudicial killings, and enforced disappearances affecting a diverse range of individuals, including teachers, doctors, students, children, and the elderly.
Thunberg also highlighted the current protests led by Baloch women, who have embarked on a 56-day march from Turbat to Islamabad. The ongoing sit-in outside the Islamabad press club symbolizes their demand for justice and the release of family members who have gone missing.
Furthermore, Thunberg connected the struggles in Balochistan with broader themes of climate justice and anti-colonialism. She emphasized the intricate connection between the fight against environmental injustice and the resistance against oppression, advocating for the rights of indigenous communities. Thunberg underscored the historical exploitation of indigenous lands for profit under colonialism.
Expressing her support for the Baloch cause, Thunberg shared an online petition against ‘Baloch genocide’ and urged her global audience to back the movement by signing and sharing the petition.
Dr. Mahrang Baloch, in response to Thunberg’s post, conveyed her gratitude for the international attention drawn to the human rights issues in Balochistan. She emphasized the significance of global solidarity in their ongoing struggle.
