During a Senate Committee on IT and Telecom meeting, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (Retd.) Hafiz Rahman confirmed the internet shutdown, revealing that the Ministry of Interior had sent a letter requesting the suspension due to security concerns associated.
The PTA Chairman explained that the decision to suspend internet services was aimed at preventing any disruptions to the military operation, emphasizing that the measure was taken to stabilize the security situation and ensure the effective progression of military efforts while prioritizing public safety.
The PTA has assured that the internet suspension is temporary, with plans for restoration once the security situation improves.
Recently, internet services have completely ceased in several districts, including Gwadar, Kech, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Ziarat, Kalat, Bolan, Dukki, Loralai, Harnai, and Mach.
This latest move follows a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister of Pakistan, where the government resolved to initiate a large-scale security operation in response to ongoing unrest in Balochistan.
The decision to impose internet restrictions has stirred controversy, especially given the heightened global scrutiny over human rights violations in the region.
Political and human rights organizations in Balochistan have expressed grave concerns that such measures are designed to obscure state oppression and human rights abuses. They also fear that this shutdown is an attempt to silence local voices that depend on the internet to connect with international communities.
