Amnesty International has raised concerns regarding a recent “heavy-handed police crackdown” on a peaceful protest organized by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) in Karachi’s Lyari. This protest was part of an awareness campaign in advance of a planned national gathering in Dalbandin on January 25, which commemorates “Baloch Genocide Remembrance Day.”
In its statement, Amnesty International condemned the excessive force used by police, who detained several women protesters for hours before releasing them. Notably, nine male protesters, including BYC Central Deputy Organizer Lala Wahab Baloch, remain in detention without any formal charges. The organization denounced the alarming trend of harassment and intimidation of Baloch activists leading up to the Dalbandin rally, pointing to criminal cases against BYC leadership as part of this repression. Amnesty called for the immediate release of all detained individuals and reaffirmed the importance of the right to peaceful assembly.
The BYC also criticized the police’s actions, stating that participants including Baloch women, elders, and youth suffered severe violence during the gathering. They claimed that this crackdown was an affront to Baloch national values and indicative of the state’s hostility towards the Baloch people. The group expressed determination to resist these measures, asserting that decades of oppression have not diminished the Baloch spirit.
Additionally, the BYC highlighted a pattern of state repression, citing recent FIRs against their leaders for organizing peaceful events, as well as internet blackouts aimed at hindering mobilization efforts. Amnesty echoed these concerns, urging the Pakistani authorities to cease arbitrary detentions and the unlawful use of force.
In response to the crackdown, the BYC announced a series of protests under the theme “Defending Baloch Values,” set to commence on Monday. These protests will coincide with ongoing awareness efforts leading to the Dalbandin national gathering. The BYC reiterated its resolve, declaring that despite state violence, the Baloch nation remains united and committed to its struggle for justice and human dignity.
