Aomar Karim Raises Human Rights Concerns in Balochistan, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan During Republic World Interview

London, United Kingdom – 17 July 2026 – Baloch human rights and political activist Aomar Karim has raised concerns over Pakistan’s human rights record in Balochistan, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during an interview with Republic World, highlighting allegations of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, political repression, restrictions on freedom of expression and the suppression of dissent.

During the interview, Aomar Karim discussed what he described as the continuing human rights challenges facing activists, journalists, students, political workers and families seeking information about relatives who have allegedly been subjected to enforced disappearance.

Balochistan

Speaking on Balochistan, Aomar Karim referred to longstanding allegations of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests and restrictions on political activity. He said many Baloch families continue to seek information about missing relatives and have pursued peaceful campaigns calling for justice and accountability.

He also expressed concern over the treatment of Baloch human rights defenders, journalists, students and political activists, stating that many face legal action and pressure for raising issues affecting their communities.

Kashmir

Addressing Kashmir, Aomar Karim raised concerns about reported restrictions on freedom of expression, arrests of political activists and limitations on civil liberties. He argued that allegations of human rights abuses by state authorities should be subject to independent investigations and accountability.

He said the protection of civilians, political activists and dissenting voices remains an important human rights issue requiring international attention.

Gilgit-Baltistan

The interview also covered developments in Gilgit-Baltistan, including recent calls for constitutional recognition and representation in Pakistan’s Parliament.

Aomar Karim said political reforms should respect the rights, democratic representation and aspirations of the local population. He argued that any constitutional changes should ensure meaningful public participation and safeguard fundamental rights.

Dr Mahrang Baloch and Sibghatullah Shah Ji

During the discussion, Aomar Karim also referred to the reported life sentences handed to Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leaders Dr Mahrang Baloch and Sibghatullah Shah Ji by a Pakistani anti-terrorism court.

He described the case as raising broader concerns about the treatment of political activists and human rights defenders, arguing that it has prompted debate over freedom of expression, peaceful political participation and the protection of civil liberties in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Political System
