A prominent Baloch activist has issued a stark warning of impending protests if five individuals including four students who were reportedly forcibly disappeared in Karachi are not released within two days.
At a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club, Sammi Deen Baloch, a leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), emphasised that enforced disappearances have become an alarming daily reality for the Baloch community. “Whenever a Baloch person addresses you from this platform, it signifies yet another innocent individual has become a victim of enforced disappearance,” she stated.
Sammi claimed that this troubling practice, which once seemed confined to Balochistan, has now spread its reach to Sindh, Punjab, and other federal territories.
She reported that unknown individuals stormed a flat in Karachi’s Maskan area early on Monday morning, detaining four Baloch students residing there. The students were confirmed to be Gamshad, an MPhil student in the Philosophy Department at the University of Karachi; Doda Ellahi, a sixth-semester International Relations student; Muzammil, a sixth-semester Philosophy student; and Mehraj, a recent graduate seeking MPhil admissions.
According to Sammi, the students had travelled from remote areas of Balochistan to Karachi to further their education. In a related incident, Ismail, a Balochistan resident who had just returned from Dubai, was also reportedly detained from Hassan Square around the same time.
Notably, two of the detained students, Doda Ellahi and Gamshad, had previously experienced enforced disappearances in 2022 but were later released. Sammi described the recurrence of such violations as deeply concerning, urging for the immediate release of the missing individuals.
“If these young men are not freed within the next two days, we will be forced to announce a rigorous protest plan,” she cautioned.
