On Thursday, a protest demonstration organized by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) took place outside the University of Balochistan in Quetta’s Sariab area, condemning the enforced disappearances of Bebarg Baloch, his brother, and other victims. The gathering also denounced the violence inflicted on families trying to identify the remains of their missing loved ones.
According to local reports, police initially attempted to prevent the protest, but public pressure led them to retreat, allowing the demonstration to proceed.
Dr. Mahrang Baloch addressed the crowd, accusing Pakistan’s military and state institutions of constitutional violations and using force to stifle dissent. “Our demand was within the framework of this country and its constitution, but here the constitution and the law are carried in the pockets of the military,” she stated.
She emphasized that the struggle is not solely against the armed forces but also against law enforcement institutions that have become extensions of military power. Dr. Baloch further asserted that state security agencies often label victims of enforced disappearances as “absconders” before discarding their mutilated bodies.
Dismissing the state’s narrative on Balochistan, she stated, “Believe me, the Baloch are now far removed from your narrative. You have been testing your strength on Balochistan for the past seven decades.”
The BYC organized the protest as a reaction to the rising abductions and ongoing harassment faced by Baloch activists and families of missing persons. Bebarg Baloch and his younger brother Dr. Hammal Baloch were forcibly disappeared on Wednesday night by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) from Sariab.
This incident follows a troubling event on Tuesday when several women were injured when Pakistani forces baton-charged families outside Quetta’s Civil Hospital, where they were seeking to identify the remains of 23 unidentified bodies transferred by security forces.
