The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) organized a protest rally in Gwadar on Sunday against the fencing that is being erected within the city. The rally brought together a diverse group of participants, including women, children, and the elderly. They held banners and placards denouncing the fencing, ‘Baloch genocide,’ and enforced disappearances at Shuda-e-Jiwani Chowk.
During the rally, speakers from the BYC, including Sibghatullah Baloch, addressed the crowd. They spoke about historical attempts by individuals from Punjab to acquire local lands, emphasizing that Balochs are still living on their land and will not be displaced. They questioned the security rationale behind the fencing and the actual benefits it would bring to the local Baloch population.
The speakers highlighted the peaceful coexistence in Gwadar, where mosques and temples stand side by side. They criticized the adverse effects of CPEC infrastructure projects on the local population, noting that the fencing in Gwadar does not ensure the safety of those who have been victims of enforced disappearances.
Sibghatullah Baloch criticized the narrative of protection used to justify the fencing, pointing out that the city is being divided into two parts for the protection of foreigners, while amenities favor non-locals. He questioned the logic of turning homes into prisons for the safety of the residents.
The Pakistani authorities decided to erect the fence around the city at the request of the Chinese government to protect it from attacks by Baloch ‘pro-independence’ groups. The fencing initiative, which was started three years ago, faced strong public backlash and was suspended. However, the process has recently resumed, sparking renewed opposition from the Baloch community.
