On 5th June 2025, the Balochistan Assembly passed what can only be described as a draconian piece of legislation — the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill 2025. Behind the façade of counterterrorism lies a sinister agenda: to crush the spirit of the Baloch people, silence dissent, and legalise human rights violations under the garb of national security.
This new amendment grants authorities the horrifying power to detain any citizen for up to three months without even producing them before a court. In a region already bleeding from decades of military crackdowns, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings, this law is yet another dagger in the heart of Balochistan.
Joint investigation teams, consisting of police and intelligence agencies notorious for their brutality, have been given free rein to raid homes, seize properties, and arrest individuals without due process. The creation of detention and deradicalisation centres echoes the grim stories of countless Baloch men who vanished into military torture cells — never to be seen again.
The inclusion of oversight boards combining military officers and select civilians is nothing but a cosmetic attempt to cloak this authoritarian law with a veil of legitimacy. The people of Balochistan know all too well how these so-called boards function — as mere rubber stamps for state-sponsored persecution.
Human rights groups and political leaders have rightly condemned the amendment, labelling it a direct violation of fundamental rights and a dangerous step towards turning Balochistan into a police state. The truth is, for the Baloch people, Pakistan has long operated as a colonial occupier rather than a government. This law only formalises what has been happening in the shadows for years.
Decades of oppression, economic plunder, and demographic engineering have alienated Balochistan’s people. Far from addressing legitimate grievances or initiating political dialogue, Pakistan’s ruling elite has chosen the path of repression. This new law will only deepen the mistrust, fuel resistance, and push an already marginalised population further to the brink.
The international community, global human rights watchdogs, and democratic nations cannot afford to stay silent. What is unfolding in Balochistan is not counterterrorism — it is state-sponsored terrorism against an entire ethnic group fighting for dignity, rights, and survival.
As a Baloch, we have witnessed generations of our people abducted, tortured, and dumped in mass graves. This law promises more of the same — and we refuse to let our voices be buried with our martyrs.
History will remember those who stood with the oppressed. It will also condemn those who stayed silent. The struggle for Baloch freedom and justice will endure — no matter how brutal the oppressor.
