A shutter-down strike was observed in various cities across Balochistan on Monday, following a call from the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M). This strike coincided with the eleventh day of the party’s ongoing sit-in protest at Lakpass in Mastung.
The strike was organized to protest the blockade of the BNP-M’s planned long march to Quetta. Party president Sardar Akhtar Jan Mengal announced the march scheduled for April 6 after unsuccessful negotiations with the government over three rounds.
Reports indicate that Pakistani security forces obstructed the group’s entry into Quetta, resorting to tear gas and shelling in an attempt to disperse the gathering.
Cities such as Gwadar, Turbat, Pasni, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Kharan, Mastung, Kalat, Dalbandin, Nushki, Surab, and Hub experienced a complete shutdown, with markets, shops, and banks closed and public transport significantly disrupted.
In Quetta, business activities were halted in multiple areas, including Kachi Baig, Sariab Road, Quetta Bazaar, and Burma Hotel, as traders responded to the BNP-M’s shutdown call.
A full strike was also observed in Wadh, the hometown of Sardar Mengal, where all commercial centers were closed for the second consecutive day.
The BNP-M claims the strike is in response to the unlawful detention of its supporters and the state’s attempts to obstruct their long march. The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has expressed its complete support for the strike.
The BNP-M is demanding the release of detained BYC leaders and activists, including Dr. Mahrang Baloch, Beebow Baloch, Sibghatullah Shah Ji, and Bebarg Zehri, and is calling for an end to the crackdown on protest sit-ins.
