On May 28th, 1998, Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in the Chaghi region of Balochistan, marking a dark day in Baloch history. The event was commemorated by Baloch social media activists as “Black Day” to raise awareness about the devastating impact of the nuclear tests on the region and its inhabitants.
Twenty-six years later, the people of the region are still suffering from the long-term effects of radiation exposure, including lethal skin cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The radioactive contamination has also affected the local wildlife, livestock, and even children born with multiple disabilities.
The nuclear tests used fissile radioactive material as an explosive, releasing radioactive shrapnel that continues to emit deadly radiation. This radiation can cause cancer and other health problems for generations to come.
To mark the occasion, the Baloch Freedom Front (BFF), a pro-independence organization. in Balochistan, using the hashtag #NukeAfterMathInBalochistan has tweeted, “Did you know that Pakistan’s nuclear testing in Balochistan has caused long-term radioactive pollution? The effects are still felt today, affecting not only humans but also animals and the environment.”

Baloch Students Organization Azad (BSO AZAD) a student organization also participated in the campaign, tweeting, “Pakistan state conducted nuclear tests in the Chaghi Town of Balochistan on 28 May 1998 without any prior warning to the local Baloch population, involving about five nuclear tests on a single day, which badly affected the local Baloch people living there for centuries.”

Baloch political activists claim that the Pakistani state tested its nukes on Baloch soil without the consent of the nation. They urge international organizations working to prevent nuclear programs to investigate the aftermath of the nuclear tests in Balochistan decently.
