Historically, the roots of spying trace back to ancient civilizations such as China, India, Egypt, and Rome. Espionage has been employed for the covert gathering of information. Similar to other countries, the practice of espionage has become increasingly pivotal and active in Balochistan following the fall of Kabul. Due to its geostrategic location, Balochistan has become the focal point of interest because of its crucial sea harbor.

Moreover, several factors influence victory and conquest in these geopolitical struggles, including economic power, technological advancement, and access to critical information about rivals. The US has exemplified this through its covert operations against various nations. Numerous instances of election manipulation, regime change, and subtle maneuvers to influence leaders demonstrate the role of reconnaissance.

Following the evacuation of the US from Afghanistan, the assertiveness displayed by regionalpowers has heightened the likelihood of skirmishes among rivals, each vying to displace theother and seize the prominent position previously held by the US. To sustain its influentialstatus, the US has deployed its informants as tools to maintain global dominance for decades.As John Perkins reveals in his book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, complex internationalrelationships have shaped him into an Economic Hit Man (EHM) who deceives nations byensnaring them in a web of debt under the guise of development projects. This strategyintertwines their interests with those of the US, increasing their dependency. He also describeshow honey traps have been used to manipulate leaders of various countries, including SaudiArabia, to achieve strategic goals.

Similarly, in The Bear Trap, Muhammad Yousaf and Mark Adkin discuss the use ofreconnaissance and proxies in Afghanistan, detailing events during the US and USSR conflict.They also reveal that personnel from the Pakistani army were sent to Afghanistan to supportlocal guerrillas rather than employing local agents for these tasks.In Balochistan, the populace must prepare to navigate geopolitical gambits, as all indicatorssuggest that the stage is set for a new geopolitical game. Here, various players exert theirinfluence to challenge or outmaneuver dominant powers. Without the consent of the indigenouspeople and the involvement of local organizations in the pursuit of their interests, foreigninvestments and projects may face significant resistance, as they would encounter widespreaddiscontent among the local population.

Another reason for the presence of operatives from secretive agencies is the ongoing freedommovement in Balochistan. Pakistani intelligence agencies assign these operatives challengingtasks; they come from various backgrounds and are directed to covertly conduct operationssuch as abducting activists, students, and individuals from different sectors, as well asengaging in drug and oil smuggling, and other illicit activities.Although technological advancements have made it easier for authorities within a country todisrupt, restrict, and control the flow of information, detectives still play a vital role in gatheringintelligence.

Agents can be classified into various categories: dead spies, double agents, local agents, livinginformants, and undercover operatives. Understanding the motivations behind these agents’actions would facilitate a clearer analysis of the situation rather than jumping to conclusions.Primarily, four consistent driving factors motivate individuals to enter the world of espionage,encapsulated by the acronym “MICE”: Money, Ideology, Coercion or Compromise, and Ego.Money is a significant motivator for many individuals who may seize the opportunity to divulgesensitive information. People with a sense of integrity would typically resist being coerced intobetraying their communities, believing that the potential for greater gain is not worthcompromising their principles.Ideology is another motivating factor for informed individuals who possess sufficient knowledge regarding a cause or movement. They may join forces based on the righteousness of their motives rather than personal incentives. However, in the context of Balochistan, this situation appears to be different, as individuals involved in such misconduct associated with thePakistani army often seem to be either drug addicts or detrimental to society.

Coercion is another factor that compels people to participate in and execute tasks assigned by agencies like Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Such individuals are often blackmailed or forced. For instance, members of insurgent groups in Balochistan may surrender in different segments, but they are subsequently pressured to work as either death squad members or agents. Those who decline the offer are murdered.

Unlike financial determinants in the MICE framework, psychological motivations can be as compelling as monetary incentives or ideological perks. People choose to become informants for the desire for recognition, power, and admiration. Individuals with narcissistic traits may choose to become spies to seek revenge, perceive themselves as patriots, or instill fear in others.

The Baloch as a nation stands firmly in the face of all challenges and adversity; this has beenexhibited through the Baloch Women’s Movement or Baloch National Gathering. Although thegovernment denies this reality, the state cannot escape its consequences. Moreover, the currentsophisticated assaults by Baloch armed forces, the participation of educated youth, and theestablishment of its intelligence wing demonstrate that the resistance is deeply entrenchedwithin Balochistan. Overlooking them in the pursuit of regional benefits could lead towidespread catastrophe and devastate an entire nation.
