Two workers tragically lost their lives in a coal mine accident in Balochistan’s Harnai district on Wednesday. Reports indicate that the miners succumbed to suffocation due to gas accumulation in the Shahrag area mine. This incident marks the second such tragedy in Balochistan this month, following another accident that claimed three lives. In March, a devastating explosion trapped 18 miners in the Zardalo coal mine, resulting in 17 fatalities.
Balochistan hosts numerous coal mining projects, where workers from various regions face the risk of accidents. Labour unions and rights organizations blame these incidents on inadequate facilities and subpar materials provided to workers. Last year alone, 69 miners lost their lives and 29 were injured in 51 accidents across Balochistan’s coal mines. Department of Minerals officials point to methane gas buildup as the leading cause of fatalities in mines across Mach, Dukki, Shahrag, Chamalang, and Quetta areas.
