Balochistan’s captivating images; A lifeline for ailing photographer

For 14 years, Kamanchar Baloch has dedicated himself to capturing the essence of Balochistan’s culture, stunning landscapes, and the plight of its impoverished residents. Born in Tehsil Mand, Balochistan, on November 25, 1998, Kamanchar has amassed over 7,000 images reflecting the region’s diverse facets. Now, however, Kamanchar is grappling with several health issues that demand urgent attention, prompting him to exhibit and sell his photographs to raise funds for his medical treatment.

Kamanchar’s Journey in Photography

Initially taking pictures on his mobile phone, Kamanchar transitioned to professional photography in 2015. “When I started, interest in photography in Makuran was scant, but I knew I wanted to showcase the beauty and struggle of my homeland,” Kamanchar said in an interview with The Balochistan Post. His portfolio encompasses not just the natural beauty of Balochistan but also its poets, writers, and various prominent figures. Kamanchar’s work has since inspired many young people to explore the field, with photographers from all corners of Balochistan now documenting the region’s rich tapestry, sharing their unique perspectives with the world.

Health Challenges and the Decision to Sell His Work

Kamanchar’s deteriorating health – including stomach ailments, vision problems, diabetes, and physical weakness – has compelled him to seek a specialist’s help, necessitating financial resources. “I’ve been practicing photography for 14 years but had never before considered selling or showcasing my work. However, my health situation has forced me to make this decision,” he said. During his time as a professional photographer, Kamanchar generously shared his art, uploading his images to social media websites and allowing people to freely download and use them without restrictions.

Kamanchar has framed his photographs using his own funds and now intends to sell them at exhibitions in Karachi, Quetta, and Turbat after Eid al-Fitr. Despite some people advising against this course of action, he remains committed to his decision, stating, “I believe that showcasing and selling my work will support me financially for the medical treatment.”
Some of his works have already found buyers, with individuals purchasing them for personal enjoyment or to support his cause. Kamanchar is optimistic that his photo exhibitions will inspire others to rally behind Balochistan’s photographers and create a platform for cultural appreciation.

The Impact of Kamanchar’s Photography and Call for Support

Having photographed an impressive 95% of Balochistan’s territories, Kamanchar’s images poignantly illustrate the region’s culture, vibrant colors, and living conditions. One of Kamanchar’s colleagues, a photographer from Lasbela, spoke with The Balochistan Post, praising Kamanchar’s ability to showcase Balochistan’s culture, natural splendor, and poverty to the world. “Many have taken up photography, thanks to Kamanchar’s influence. He has been an inspiration to many working in this field”, the colleague told The Balochistan Post. Today, however, one of Balochistan’s most skilled photographers faces a battle against illness, and if he does not receive support, the new generation of photographers may lose hope. He concluded.
