Popular Swedish environment and climate justice activist Greta Thunberg has raised alarm over reports of a crackdown by Pakistani state forces on the ‘Baloch Raaji Muchi’ (Baloch National Gathering) in Gwadar, Balochistan.
Thunberg took to social media platform X to express her concerns, urging the Pakistani government to cease its actions. “The government must end the crackdown on the peaceful gathering organized by Baloch women against the Baloch genocide, which includes blocking roads, raiding homes, and abducting organizers,” she stated.
Describing the situation in Gwadar as “extremely concerning,” Thunberg emphasized that “the right to resist state repression is a fundamental human right,” and called for the release of all organizers and individuals who have been forcibly disappeared.
The ‘Baloch Raaji Muchi,’ organized by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), is scheduled for Sunday, July 28, and aims to raise awareness about human rights violations, resource exploitation, and allegations of genocide against the Baloch people.
In preparation for the event, Pakistani authorities have reportedly taken significant steps to prevent it from occurring, including blocking roads, raiding the homes of organizers, and detaining BYC activists and volunteers.
Additionally, mobile and internet services have been suspended in several cities, and a heavy security presence has been established across Quetta and other areas of Balochistan to manage potential public unrest.
The internet blackout in the Makuran region has obscured the current situation in Gwadar, but sources have informed that a complete blockade has been imposed in Gwadar and its surrounding areas. Numerous BYC activists have reportedly been arrested, and allegations have arisen that the coast guard fired warning shots at a convoy attempting to enter Gwadar. Reports also indicate that warning shots were discharged last night at Naleent Zero Point and Talaar to disperse crowds gathering in anticipation of the planned event.
