Dr. Sabiha Baloch, a leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), has voiced her strong opposition to the possible discussions between Saudi Arabia and the Pakistani government regarding a 15% stake in the Reko Diq mining project in Balochistan. She asserts that any agreement reached without the consent of the Baloch people constitutes a blatant exploitation of local resources.
In her statement on X, Dr. Sabiha highlighted that such an arrangement would contravene international norms, specifically citing violations of Article 11 of the Cairo Declaration and Articles 1(2) and 55 of the United Nations Charter. She emphasized that the Baloch, who have a history of resisting external appropriation of their resources, have not been consulted regarding this prospective deal.
Dr. Sabiha accused Pakistani authorities of leveraging Balochistan’s rich natural resources to address issues of corruption and financial misconduct, framing it as part of a broader strategy of resource extraction and suppression of dissent. She warned that foreign investors in these “mega projects” would be complicit in ongoing injustices if they overlook the Baloch people’s approval.
Reflecting on the historical ties between the Baloch and Arab nations, rooted in friendship and cultural connections, Dr. Sabiha cautioned that Saudi Arabia’s involvement in Reko Diq could be perceived as systemic oppression. This could lead to growing resentment towards the Kingdom and jeopardize cultural bonds.
She urged Saudi Arabia to avoid engaging in projects that disregard local rights, asserting that any agreement made without the Baloch people’s consent would be deemed unjust and would likely provoke “strong resistance.”
