Enforced disappearances in Balochistan have emerged as a grave human rights crisis, casting a long, dark shadow over the region. This sinister practice, characterized by the abduction of individuals by state or state-sanctioned agents followed by a refusal to acknowledge the fate or whereabouts of the disappeared, has left countless families in agony and fear.
Despite being the largest province in terms of area in Pakistan, Balochistan is still one of the least developed and most violent areas of the nation despite its abundance of natural resources. For a considerable amount of time, the Baloch people have been demanding more autonomy and control over their resources, which has resulted in several insurgencies and military suppression.
Human rights organizations have documented hundreds of cases of enforced disappearances since the early 2000s when reports of such incidents began to increase. Targets have included journalists, activists, students, and regular people; these attacks are frequently the result of accusations that they support Baloch nationalist movements or criticize the government. Security forces and intelligence services routinely carry out these disappearances while enjoying complete impunity.
Forcible disappearances have far-reaching consequences that go well beyond the immediate victims. Families are left to search for answers in a state of perpetual limbo, torn between hope and despair. The agony of not knowing if a loved one is still alive or has passed away is made worse by the lack of legal options and the worry that speaking up could result in retaliation.

The situation has also been noted by the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, which is pleading with the Pakistani government to adhere to its international human rights commitments. However, significant progress has been hampered by the absence of political will and the strength of military interests in Balochistan.
Human rights advocates and Baloch activists fearlessly keep speaking up in the face of hardship. To bring attention to the situation of the disappeared, they plan demonstrations, compile case studies, and communicate with foreign organizations. Social media has developed into an essential tool for spreading their message, establishing a connection with a worldwide audience, and raising awareness of their cause.
Organizations such as the Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) have played an important role in raising awareness of individual cases and demanding government accountability.
