The family of Rashid Hussain Baloch, a missing human rights activist, staged a protest in Quetta on Sunday, seeking information about his whereabouts following his enforced disappearance in 2018.
Hussain was allegedly detained by Emirati intelligence agencies in Dubai and subsequently extradited to Pakistan, where his family claims he has been missing ever since. The protest drew the participation of other families of missing persons and political activists, who held photographs of their loved ones and banners, voicing slogans against enforced disappearances and what they characterize as the “genocide of the Baloch people.”
At the rally, Hussain’s mother recounted her son’s tragic journey, stating that he had lived in self-exile in the UAE, working as a laborer, before being abducted by Emirati authorities and handed over to Pakistani officials. “We have knocked on every door seeking justice—from human rights organizations to courts and the commission for missing persons—but everywhere we go, we are met with despair,” she lamented.
The family revealed that Hussain had fled Pakistan due to threats and the deaths of several relatives, seeking asylum and a safer life in the UAE. However, reports indicate he was detained by UAE authorities, held incommunicado for six months, and then extradited back to Pakistan. Initial reports from Pakistani media and officials confirmed his arrest and deportation, but many of these statements have since been recanted.
The family expressed frustration over the Islamabad High Court’s repeated delays in addressing their case, claiming that instead of justice, they have faced harassment and a lack of support from the judicial system. They are calling on human rights organizations and the international community to pressure the Pakistani government to disclose information about Hussain’s whereabouts and to facilitate his release.
