Former senator and human rights defender Farhatullah Babar has issued a strong warning against branding Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leader Dr. Mahrang Baloch or her organization as “terrorists” without any credible evidence or legal proceedings. Babar, who chairs the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Human Rights Committee, described such accusations as “extremely problematic” and cautioned that they could have serious repercussions if left unchallenged.
Babar’s comments came in response to a recent press conference held by Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR). During the briefing, the military spokesperson criticized Dr. Mahrang Baloch, alleging her links to “terrorist networks” and urging media outlets to reveal what he called the “sinister face” of the BYC. These remarks have sparked concern over the increasing militarization of narratives against human rights defenders in Balochistan.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Babar emphasized that unilaterally labeling any group or individual as terrorists was “unwise and dangerous.” He cautioned against acting on impulse, stating, “It is unwise and dangerous to mount a high horse without knowing how to dismount.” Babar urged authorities and media to exercise restraint and avoid hastily branding activists and organizations without due process.
He further warned that such labels could backfire, undermining efforts to promote dialogue and human rights in the region. Babar stressed the importance of respecting the rights of activists like Dr. Baloch, who has consistently championed peaceful resistance and human rights issues in Balochistan, despite facing intimidation and repression.
In response to the allegations, Dr. Mahrang Baloch issued a statement from jail, which was shared on her official social media account. She dismissed the military’s accusations as “baseless” and part of a broader pattern aimed at silencing dissenting voices in Balochistan. Her statement condemned the campaign of vilification and called for credible evidence before making such serious allegations.
Dr. Baloch questioned the legitimacy of the claims, asking, “Where is the evidence?” She challenged the military and intelligence agencies to produce proof if they truly possess the capabilities they claim. Her response highlighted her stance that her activism is rooted in peaceful principles and universal human rights, not violence or terrorism.
She reiterated her dedication to peaceful activism, emphasizing that her work is “grounded in universal human rights values.” Dr. Baloch stated that she has always condemned violence from all sides, including actions committed by non-state actors and state forces alike. Her principled stance underscores her commitment to non-violent advocacy in a highly repressive environment.
