The Islamabad High Court, led by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, conducted a hearing on November 29 concerning the case of more than 50 missing Baloch students.
Previously, the court had instructed caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar to aid in the recovery of the students or appear before the court. However, despite the urgency and the court’s explicit directive, the caretaker Prime Minister was conspicuously absent, attributed by Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan to the Prime Minister’s week-long trip to the Middle East.
Present at the hearing were Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti, Human Rights Minister Khalil George, attorney Imaan Zainab Mazari, and families of the missing students. Awan informed the court that 22 of the missing students had been located and returned home, leaving 28 still missing. He highlighted the challenge posed by the lack of detailed identification information for these students.
During the hearing, Justice Kayani issued a strong warning, stating that if the remaining missing students are not recovered by the next court session, legal proceedings will be initiated against top government officials, including the Prime Minister, the Minister of Interior, and the Secretary of Defense.
Expressing deep concern about the situation, Justice Kayani emphasized the fundamental human rights at stake. He noted that allegations often involve state security agencies and stressed the necessity of accountability.
Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti mentioned overlooked aspects by the commission, including cases of individuals traveling to Afghanistan. However, Justice Kayani emphasized that in cases of enforced disappearances, it is often the state’s own agencies that are implicated.
The court expressed frustration with the lack of progress after numerous hearings, directing criticism at the Minister of Interior. Justice Kayani underscored the need for legal action against guilty parties, insisting on accountability for all involved agencies.
In concluding remarks, Justice Kayani highlighted the state’s failure to adequately address these disappearances. He firmly stated that if the missing students are not found, legal action will be taken against top officials, including the Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior, conveying the gravity of the situation.
