A local court in Islamabad has issued non-bailable arrest warrants for human rights lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Advocate Hadi Ali Chattha, in connection with a case involving social media posts deemed controversial against state institutions and national security agencies. The Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka ordered their arrest and directed that both be produced before the court on 24 September. Despite requests from defence lawyers to cancel the warrants, the court promptly rejected these pleas and adjourned the proceedings to the same date.
The case has been registered by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) under multiple sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). According to the FIR, the accused are alleged to have incited ethnic divisions through their online posts and to have blamed security forces for enforced disappearances in regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Authorities have linked Mazari and Chattha to banned groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), and the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), charges which they deny.
The move to issue warrants comes amid recent tensions involving Mazari, especially with Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar. These tensions arose after a heated exchange during a court hearing concerning the removal of Baloch political leader Dr Mahrang Baloch’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL). Following this incident, Mazari filed complaints of workplace harassment against the Chief Justice with the High Court’s internal committee and the Supreme Judicial Council. Since then, multiple legal proceedings have been initiated against her, intensifying her legal challenges.
Mazari maintains that her only stance has been advocating for accountability regarding enforced disappearances and the release of Dr Mahrang Baloch. She has categorically denied any links to banned groups or involvement in activities aimed at destabilizing the state. Her supporters and human rights advocates argue that the charges against her are politically motivated attempts to silence her voice and suppress her advocacy for victims and marginalized communities.
Families of missing persons from Balochistan, who have been protesting in Islamabad for the past 69 days, strongly condemned the warrants, viewing them as an effort to silence dissent. They expressed solidarity with Mazari, describing her as a principled lawyer who has consistently supported victims’ families and championed constitutional rights. The protesters emphasized that her work is vital for raising awareness about enforced disappearances and state abuses.
The protestors called on the international community and human rights organizations to intervene and pressure Pakistan to end what they called harassment of peaceful activists. Despite facing government indifference and what they described as media silence, they vowed to continue their demonstration. The families of missing persons and supporters remain committed to their cause, asserting that justice and accountability must prevail, and criticizing the government’s approach to dissent and human rights advocacy.
