Dr. Mahrang Baloch, central organizer of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), is calling on human rights organizations and the international community to take urgent action regarding an internet blackout in Dalbandin, a town in Balochistan. This blackout is particularly concerning as it coincides with the upcoming Baloch Genocide Remembrance Day on January 25, when many Baloch people are expected to gather to protest against ongoing human rights abuses.
In her post on X, Dr. Baloch emphasized that the internet shutdown is a significant violation of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and assembly. She expressed her apprehension that such actions could precede a government crackdown on peaceful gatherings, highlighting a troubling trend where digital censorship is employed to silence dissent. Dr. Baloch urged human rights organizations to intervene quickly and press authorities for the immediate restoration of internet services, stressing the importance of respecting the Baloch people’s rights to gather peacefully and express their views.
The internet blackout has raised alarms among organizers of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), who fear it may signal an impending violent response from the government against peaceful protesters in Dalbandin. They believe that the restrictions on communication hinder their ability to document and report human rights violations, further exacerbating the vulnerability of the Baloch people.
Dr. Baloch’s appeal notes that similar internet shutdowns occurred during previous gatherings, such as the Baloch National Gathering in Gwadar in July, where participants faced severe repression. Through her statements, she is calling for greater awareness and immediate action from both local and international human rights advocates to prevent further violations and ensure the Baloch community can safely voice their concerns.
