Freedom and justice, though seemingly interlinked, present a philosophical conundrum that compels us to question their coexistence. These principles challenge us to assess their intrinsic value and the metaphorical trapdoor they open in the realm of political and moral inquiry.

Freedom refers to the ability of individuals to make choices without undue obstruction from external forces. It provides autonomy and free will, allowing individuals to act, discourse, and ruminate without restrictions. Justice, on the other hand, emphasizes equity, fairness, and moral even-handedness. It relies on transparent institutions and the rule of law to sustain social order, ensuring the preservation of individual rights through ethical standards.

The relationship between freedom and justice often reveals itself when personal liberties clash with societal fairness. For instance, excessive freedom could lead to injustice if it enables individuals to harm or oppress others. Conversely, an overzealous pursuit of justice, devoid of regard for individual freedoms, risks descending into authoritarianism or militarism. Thus, the challenge lies in finding a balance, one that maximizes collective benefit while respecting individual autonomy—a principle akin to Pareto efficiency.

In oppressive states, however, this balance is disrupted. Justice is frequently corrupted,manipulated to serve the interests of despots and callous leaders. The judiciary and law, far from upholding fairness, often become tools of oppression. Offenders are shielded, their illicit actions condoned with impunity. Constitutional amendments legalize acts of brutality, while provisions safeguarding the rights of the oppressed are disregarded. Peaceful struggles for justice are labeled as terrorism, while state-sponsored violence is legitimized.

In such environments, freedom becomes an indispensable precursor to justice. Oppression thrives on the denial of fundamental rights, including freedom of speech, assembly, and thought. Reclaiming these freedoms is often the first step toward dismantling oppressive structures and achieving justice.

Michael Sandel, in his book Justice, offers three primary approaches to understanding and achieving justice:

1. Maximizing Welfare: Prioritizing the greatest happiness or utility for the majority.
2. Respecting Freedom: Upholding individual rights and autonomy, as long as they do not harm others.
3. Promoting Virtue: Cultivating moral character and virtues necessary for a good society.

When applied to corrupt and colonial states like Pakistan, none of these approaches seem to prevail. Justice is manipulated to maintain the status quo, while freedom is systematically suppressed. In such contexts, the pursuit of freedom becomes crucial for several reasons:

1. Freedom as a Path to Justice: Without freedom, justice remains unattainable. Oppressive regimes undermine fair legal systems and silence dissent. Fighting for basic freedoms creates the space to challenge oppression and demand justice.
2. Freedom Enables Resistance: Access to justice is often controlled by those in power. Freedom from censorship, imprisonment, or authoritarian laws empowers citizens to organize, resist, and expose injustices.
3. Justice Corrupted by Oppression: In oppressive systems, justice is often weaponized to perpetuate inequality. Pursuing justice within such frameworks may inadvertently sustain oppression unless freedom is first secured.
4. Freedom as Both an End and a Means: Freedom is not merely a means to achieve justice; it is a fundamental human right. While justice seeks fairness, freedom ensures the ability to live according to one’s values and participate meaningfully in society.

However, freedom without order can devolve into anarchy, where the powerful manipulate laws to exploit the weak and entrench their dominance. Thus, freedom must coexist with a framework that upholds justice to prevent its abuse.

In conclusion, while both freedom and justice are essential, their significance varies depending on the context. In oppressive states, the reclamation of freedom is paramount, for it lays the groundwork for justice. Without freedom, justice remains a hollow promise—a tool in the hands of the oppressor rather than a beacon of hope for the oppressed.
