Residents of Panjgur’s Khudabadan area organized a protest rally and silent walk on Wednesday to condemn the recent killing of 21-year-old Zeeshan Zaheer Baloch. Zeeshan’s body, riddled with bullets, was discovered hours after he was reportedly abducted by a state-backed armed group. The demonstration aimed to highlight concerns over escalating violence and state-sponsored repression in the region.
The protest took place in Mowach Bazaar, where a large number of local residents gathered to voice their outrage. Participants held placards and banners condemning state violence and accusing authorities of fostering a climate of fear and intimidation. The demonstrators denounced what they called “state terrorism” and the increasing influence of death squads operating in Balochistan.
Following the rally, a silent walk was organized in Zeeshan’s memory, initiated by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC). The march began at Mowach Chowk and proceeded to Kahoor Cemetery in Khudabadan. It served as a somber tribute to Zeeshan and a call for justice amid ongoing human rights abuses.
Zeeshan Zaheer Baloch was abducted on June 29 from the Football Chowk area. His body was found the next morning near Ghareeb Nawaz Hotel, bearing multiple gunshot wounds. Zeeshan was a member of the BYC’s Panjgur Organizing Committee and had been actively campaigning for justice and political rights before his death.
Tragically, Zeeshan’s father, Zaheer Ahmed Baloch, had been forcibly disappeared over a decade earlier, on April 13, 2015, when Zeeshan was only eleven years old. Growing up without his father, Zeeshan spent his youth protesting on the streets, demanding his father’s safe return and drawing attention to ongoing enforced disappearances in the region.
The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) strongly condemned Zeeshan’s killing, holding the Pakistani state fully responsible. BYC’s central leader, Sammi Deen Baloch, described the incident as a stark example of state brutality, emphasizing that the family’s suffering exemplified the ongoing repression faced by Baloch activists. She pointed out that under state patronage, youth are being abducted and their mutilated bodies discarded in desolate areas, creating a lawless environment.
She further warned that disappearances and extrajudicial killings are increasingly targeting politically active Baloch youth, aiming to silence their voices. Calling for resistance against what she termed “institutionalized repression,” she urged the public to stand against this ongoing campaign of violence and human rights abuses, emphasizing the urgent need for justice and accountability in Balochistan.
