Peter Tatchell advocates for Balochistan’s self-determination at international conference

Pakistan may temporarily postpone Balochistan’s pursuit of self-determination, but doing so will incur a significant financial, moral, political, and reputational cost. Ultimately, the freedom of Balochistan is inevitable, and denying it is neither justified nor sustainable in the long run.

These insights were shared by renowned human rights lawyer Peter Tatchell during the fifth Balochistan International Conference (BIC), organized by the Baloch National Movement.

Tatchell outlined a comprehensive vision for peace and self-determination in Balochistan. Speaking to Baloch leaders, activists, and international observers, he stressed the immediate need for a clear and actionable strategy to address the decades-long conflict and the ongoing occupation of Balochistan by Pakistan.

Emphasizing the significant challenges faced by the Baloch people, Tatchell highlighted the necessity of focusing on solutions rather than merely rehearsing the problems. “We all know the problem,” he stated. “What we should be focusing on are the solutions.”

Drawing from his extensive experience supporting global freedom movements, Tatchell affirmed that the future of Balochistan lies in the hands of its people. “It is not for me or any other outsider to determine the solutions,” he said.

Tatchell referenced the Balochistan Freedom Charter, initially proposed by Baloch activists in Geneva, describing it as a roadmap that could reduce conflict and secure national independence for Balochistan. He explained that presenting a credible and comprehensive plan could bolster international support for the Baloch movement.

To achieve peace and self-determination, Tatchell proposed several key actions, including an immediate ceasefire under United Nations supervision, the release of political prisoners, and an end to military operations on both sides. He underscored the importance of allowing journalists, aid organizations, and human rights groups, who are currently barred from entering Balochistan, access to the region.

He also advocated for the return of displaced individuals, restitution of their properties, and compensation for damages sustained during the conflict. Tatchell condemned Pakistan’s policy of demographic manipulation in Balochistan through the settlement of non-Baloch individuals, labeling it a form of colonial manipulation.

“The central demand of the peace process is a UN-supervised referendum, which would allow the Baloch people to determine their future, including the option of independence,” Tatchell emphasized, stressing that the right to self-determination is enshrined in the United Nations Charter, and Baloch leadership must assert this right.

In his address, Tatchell presented his vision for a free and independent Balochistan, grounded in principles of social justice, equality, and democracy. He argued that human rights for all citizens, including equal rights for women, must be prioritized. Addressing gender inequality in a region often dominated by patriarchal and tribal structures, he noted that this issue is of significant concern.

Tatchell proposed land ownership reforms to ensure that all adult Baloch citizens have a stake in land ownership, aiming to rectify stark disparities in wealth and land distribution. He called for a fair redistribution of wealth and power, asserting that Balochistan’s resources should benefit the broader population rather than a select elite.

He firmly supported the establishment of a secular state where all religions are treated equally under law, without any faith receiving precedence over others. Tatchell insisted that a democratic Balochistan must adhere to international human rights standards, guaranteeing freedom of expression, the right to protest, and a free press.

In conclusion, Tatchell called for the creation of a commission to investigate extrajudicial arrests and disappearances in Balochistan, stating, “Such investigations would provide justice to the victims and their families.” He urged Baloch leaders to present their case to the international community with a clear and actionable plan.

Referencing historical movements, he drew comparisons with Vietnam’s success in resisting U.S. occupation, highlighting that a small, determined population can triumph over a powerful adversary. “David can defeat Goliath,” he affirmed.

Tatchell concluded with a strong statement on the Baloch right to self-determination, insisting that while Pakistan may attempt to delay Balochistan’s independence, it will come at a steep price. “The world is watching, and Balochistan’s freedom cannot be permanently denied.”
