Police in Balochistan’s Hub opened fire on protesters and detained several individuals during a demonstration organized by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) on Saturday, amid mounting public outrage over the alleged extrajudicial killing of young activist Zeeshan Zaheer.
The protest in Hub Chowki, part of a wider province-wide movement, was held to condemn what the BYC described as the “cold-blooded, state-backed killing” of Zeeshan Zaheer. The rally was peaceful until police, along with plainclothes officers and local officials, moved to forcibly disperse the crowd, leading to violence.
According to BYC statements, police used live fire in an attempt to break up the demonstration, resulting in injuries to several protesters. Many others, including family members of forcibly disappeared persons, were reportedly arrested during the crackdown on the protest.
The BYC strongly condemned the police action, asserting that the use of force violated fundamental human rights. The organization emphasized that the right to peaceful assembly is protected under the constitution and international law, condemning the violence as both immoral and unlawful.
The group named SSP Hub Fazal Shah, Deputy Commissioner Nisar Ahmed, and MPA Mir Ali Hassan as responsible for the incident, accusing them of facilitating ongoing state atrocities in the region. The BYC called on the public and human rights organizations to condemn these “inhumane actions” and to stand in support of peaceful protests.
Saturday’s demonstration was part of a broader campaign launched by the BYC following Zeeshan Zaheer’s killing. Similar protests took place in cities including Panjgur, Karachi, Dalbandin, Turbat, Kharan, and Nushki, with a complete shutdown observed in Chaghi and surrounding areas.
Zeeshan Zaheer’s family recounted that he was abducted on June 29 near Nivan Nadi in Panjgur. His relative, Kifayatullah Baloch, explained that Zeeshan was taken by armed men in two black Surf vehicles shortly after returning from a football match, with no known affiliation to any group.
Kifayatullah stated that Zeeshan was an athlete and a responsible family member, emphasizing that his only “crime” was peacefully demanding the return of his father, Zaheer Ahmed, who had been forcibly disappeared a decade ago. Zeeshan’s body was later found, riddled with bullets and subjected to torture.
The family and supporters of Zeeshan are demanding justice and questioning whether such treatment was deserved for a young man who never resorted to violence or hatred. The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage in Panjgur and beyond, with calls for accountability and an end to enforced disappearances and state violence in the region.
