Early Saturday morning, Pakistani security forces launched a raid on a sit-in protest in Quetta, forcibly seizing the remains of three deceased protesters and detaining prominent activist Dr. Mahrang Baloch, along with several members of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC). The current locations of those detained remain unknown.
The sit-in commenced on Friday evening in the Sariab area of Quetta, triggered by the deaths of three protesters and injuries to numerous others. The violence escalated earlier on Friday when police intervened with live fire, tear gas, and water cannons to disperse a BYC-led demonstration against enforced disappearances.
In a statement released late Friday, the Balochistan government defended the actions of law enforcement, claiming they were executed “in accordance with the law” after demonstrators allegedly attacked police personnel. However, observers and activists contest this narrative, asserting that excessive force was used against peaceful protesters.
According to the BYC, a violent raid was conducted by police and state agencies around 5:30 AM on Saturday. The organization reported that the bodies of the slain protesters were forcibly taken, and several activists, including Dr. Mahrang Baloch—one of the main organizers were arrested.
“Quetta police and the administration have detained Dr. Mahrang Baloch along with her associates and have unlawfully confiscated the bodies of our martyred youth,” the BYC stated. They also reported that women and children present at the protest were subjected to violence.
Labeling the raid an “act of terrorism,” the BYC has called for the immediate release of all detained activists and the return of the confiscated bodies.
In response to the incidents of Friday, a shutter-down and wheel-jam strike is currently taking place across Balochistan. Shops, business centers, and major highways in various districts have been closed.
“Tomorrow, businesses will remain shut, and transportation will come to a standstill in protest against the state’s brutality,” the BYC announced in a statement on Friday night.
