Asad Ali Toor, a Pakistani journalist, was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Islamabad shortly after his appearance before the FIA on Monday. Despite a prior order from the Islamabad High Court instructing the FIA not to harass Toor, the journalist was apprehended upon arrival at the FIA office. Iman Mazari, a lawyer and human rights activist, expressed dismay, noting that lawyers were denied entry and doors were closed during Toor’s appearance.
The FIA confirmed the arrest after hours passed without any sign of Toor, leading to condemnation from various quarters. Mahrang Baloch, a human rights activist and leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), strongly criticized the arbitrary arrest, highlighting the common occurrence of lawsuits, FIRs, and threats faced by those discussing the constitution and law in Pakistan. Baloch emphasized the heightened risks of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings, particularly in Balochistan.
Dr. Mahrang Baloch urged international human rights organizations to speak out in support of Asad Toor, calling for immediate action to ensure his protection. Renowned Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir commented on the situation, stating that this isn’t the first time the FIA has arrested Toor. Mir recalled previous cases during Imran Khan’s tenure where the FIA failed to substantiate any charges, speculating that the arrest under the current government may be an attempt to settle old scores with the journalist.
As news of Asad Toor’s arrest spreads, concerns over press freedom and the safety of journalists in Pakistan have been reignited, prompting calls for accountability and respect for human rights.
