A protest rally held in Hub Chowki, an industrial city in Balochistan, commemorated the six-year anniversary of the enforced disappearance of Baloch activist Rashid Hussain. Rashid was abducted in the UAE in 2018 and, after six months without legal process, was handed over to Pakistan, where his whereabouts remain unknown.
Despite numerous petitions submitted to various courts, including the Sindh, Balochistan, and Islamabad High Courts, there has been no progress in locating him.
Rashid’s mother voiced her despair, stating, “I have been searching for my son for six years, but no one is providing answers. If my son has committed a crime, present him in court. Keeping him missing for six years is unacceptable.” She urged international organizations and human rights bodies to recognize her son’s disappearance as a serious violation of human rights.
During a recent court hearing, lawyer and human rights activist Imaan Mazari revealed that Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed Rashid’s transfer to Pakistan, yet has not disclosed any information regarding his current location or condition.
The protest also shed light on the broader phenomenon of enforced disappearances occurring in Balochistan. Families of other missing persons participated in the rally, recounting their own experiences of abduction and the ongoing lack of accountability. Aslam Baloch’s father expressed his frustration, saying, “My son has been missing for several years. We are only given false promises and reassurances.”
Political leaders and activists condemned the government’s inaction and the suppression of dissent. Former BSO Pajjar chairman Wahid Raheem remarked, “Enforced disappearances have become routine in Balochistan, and affected families are often threatened or silenced. This is a violation of both the constitution and basic human rights.”
Protesters called for the immediate recovery of Rashid Hussain and all missing persons, demanding accountability and legal repercussions for those responsible. The rally urged the international community to intervene in this humanitarian crisis and ensure justice for the affected families.
