On Wednesday, Punjab police conducted a raid on a book stall in Dajal, Rajanpur, associated with the Baloch Students Action Committee (BSAC) as part of the “Balochistan Kitaab Karwaan” (Book Caravan) initiative, which seeks to promote education and intellectual discourse in the region. Several members of the BSAC were arrested during the raid, and although they were taken to an undisclosed location, they were released a few hours later.
The BSAC reported that the police dismantled their stall without providing justification for their actions. Azhar Baloch, a central leader of the BSAC, criticized the arrests, which he claimed were indicative of a broader pattern of targeting educational efforts linked to the organization in Balochistan and surrounding areas, including Dera Ghazi Khan and Taunsa Sharif. He expressed concerns that such actions by the police signify an intent to suppress educational initiatives by harassing students and opposing the dissemination of knowledge.
A spokesperson for the BSAC condemned the police’s repeated actions against students, asserting that authorities were undermining pro-education initiatives rather than supporting them. They highlighted a similar incident in Gwadar, where four BSAC members faced arrests under alleged fabricated charges.
The BSAC called upon human rights organizations, journalists, and civil society to recognize what they described as increasing restrictions on student-led educational projects. They warned that if such suppression continued, it would be met with strong opposition, emphasizing the importance of academic freedom and educational access in the region.
