On May 28, 1998, the barren hills of Chaghi, Balochistan, witnessed a cataclysmic event that would leave an indelible mark on Balochistan’s history and the lives of its people. The day marked Pakistan’s entry into the nuclear club with the detonation of five nuclear devices in the Ras Koh Hills, an event known as Chagai-I. While celebrated by some as a demonstration of national strength and sovereignty, the test’s aftermath raised serious concerns about its human and environmental costs, particularly for the people of Balochistan.
In the wake of India’s nuclear tests, Pakistan felt compelled to demonstrate its own nuclear capability.
