Like Moses wielding his staff, this beacon, armed only with a pen, fearlessly confronts the tyrant. Saba is that Qandeel, the guiding light that ignites the spirit of the Baloch Nation. Born in 1953 in Mauripur, Ghulam Hussain Baloch, widely acclaimed as Prof. Saba Dasht- yari, was deeply influenced by the literary giants Banok Dashtyari and Syed Zahoor Shah Hashmi during his upbringing in Lyari. It was there that his family had relocated in his early years. Profi- cient in multiple languages such as English, Farsi, and Arabic, Saba held a master’s degree in Phi- losophy and Islamic Studies, sharing his wisdom as a theology teacher at Balochistan University.
Saba’s literary contributions are profound, with over 24 books authored encompassing Balochi liter- ature, history, poetry, and translations. He also established the Syed Zahoor Shah Hashmi Refer- ence Library in Malir, Karachi. Few individuals have displayed such personal and professional com- mitment to the promotion of Balochi language and culture as Prof. Saba Dashtyari did. Ingeniously, Saba devised a method to counter state policies by cultivating a counter-culture rooted in Balochi language, culture, history, and literature. He believed that “Our collective history as a people is our identity, and it should serve as the foundation for our political movement, aiming to dismantle the colonial establishment in Balochistan and secure national emancipation from the states of Iran and Pakistan.” On June 1, 2001, Prof. Saba Dashtyari’s life was tragically cut short when personnel from Pakistani intelligence agencies opened fire on him during his evening walk on Sariab Road, Quetta. In his final speech, he courageously proclaimed, “We should not fear the truth; we must con- front it. The inability of Pakistanis to face the truth has driven them to madness, leading them to kill Baloch people in their quest for control over Balochistan.”
Prof. Saba Dashtyari’s legacy continues to inspire and ignite the spirit of resistance within the Baloch Nation. His unwavering dedication to preserving the Balochi language, culture, and history. serves as a beacon of hope for future generations. Through his intellectual prowess and eloquence, Prof. Saba challenged the dominant narratives imposed by the state, exposing the injustices and re- pression faced by the Baloch people. His words resonated deeply with those yearning for freedom and justice, instilling a sense of pride and resilience in their hearts. Prof. Saba’s assassination was a tragic loss not only for the Baloch nation but for the entire realm of literature and academia. His profound knowledge and expertise in various fields made him a guiding light for aspiring scholars and writers, leaving an indelible mark on the literary landscape of Balochistan. The sacrifice of Prof. Saba Dashtyari serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by those who dare to speak truth to power. His courage in the face of adversity and his unwavering commitment to the cause of Baloch liberation will forever be etched in the annals of history. Today, as Baloch students and intellectuals carry forward the torch lit by Prof. Saba, his vision of a free Baloch land remains a guiding force. His life and work continue to inspire the pursuit of justice, freedom, and self-deter- mination for the Baloch people. In honoring the memory of Prof. Saba Dashtyari, we not only pay tribute to his remarkable life but also recommit ourselves to the struggle for a free nation.
