She condemned the reported threats against Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) aimed at shutting down its long-standing protest camp in Quetta. Her statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the ongoing struggle for human rights in Balochistan.
Her comments came after VBMP alleged that it was receiving threats intended to force the organization to cease its protests outside the Quetta Press Club. The threats, according to VBMP, are part of an effort to halt its campaign against enforced disappearances, which have become a symbol of suffering for countless families in the region.
Nasrullah Baloch, Chairman of VBMP, stated that these threats are designed to silence voices raising concerns over human rights violations. Despite this intimidation, he affirmed that the organization would continue its peaceful struggle against enforced disappearances, emphasizing their commitment to justice and human dignity.
Dr. Sabiha expressed her concern that the threats against VBMP reflect a broader pattern of state conduct aimed at silencing anyone who advocates for human rights, justice, and the right to life. She highlighted that enforced disappearances are not only illegal but also a clear violation of constitutional principles, yet they persist openly with the complicity of state institutions.
She pointed out that those who speak out against enforced disappearances continue to face threats, harassment, arrests, and repression. Despite these obstacles, she praised the resilience of the families and organizations fighting for justice, describing their continued efforts as a testament to their unwavering courage.
The VBMP protest camp outside the Quetta Press Club has been ongoing for over 6,172 days. Dr. Sabiha described this camp as “more than just a protest,” viewing it instead as a powerful symbol of the pain, hope, and resilience of thousands of families who have been waiting for the recovery of their loved ones.
She emphasized that the camp represents mothers, sisters, children, and elders who have been sitting on the roads for years, demanding the safe return of their loved ones. Instead of providing relief or justice, she lamented that these families are subjected to threats and intimidation, further deepening their wounds.
Dr. Sabiha also highlighted the imprisonment of BYC leadership, who have been detained for the past year for raising a peaceful voice against repression. She condemned the harassment and threats faced by VBMP leaders as “extremely shameful” acts that serve to silence peaceful advocates and activists.
In her concluding remarks, she called on the authorities to recognize that suppressing voices through threats, imprisonment, and repression cannot silence the demand for justice. She reaffirmed that the memories and hopes of mothers and families searching for their loved ones cannot be erased and that the desire for life and justice remains alive as long as enforced disappearances continue.
