The ‘Balochistan Kitaab Karwaan,’ an endeavor led by the Baloch Students Action Committee (BSAC), encountered hurdles during its recent book fair at Ghazi University in Dera Ghazi Khan. This campaign is part of a larger series intending to encourage reading and educational activities in different institutions throughout Balochistan.
As per a statement from the BSAC, the university administration did not provide clearance for the first day of the book fair, despite previous agreements and arrangements. The Committee expressed dismay over this decision, citing it as an impediment to their mission of cultivating a literary atmosphere.
Despite engaging in discussions with university authorities, including department heads and deans, a satisfactory resolution wasn’t achieved, leading them to exhibit their materials, such as books, outside the university gate. This action reportedly caused disruption and frustration among students.
The following day, the organizers placed the book stall on a university footpath in protest against the administration’s decision. The BSAC claims the university responded by restricting student access to the stall and deploying security personnel around the area.
Despite these reported challenges, the book fair continued until its scheduled conclusion at 3 pm, drawing the participation of university students, educators, librarians, and book enthusiasts.
Additionally, the BSAC arranged another phase of the book fair in Model Town, DG Khan city, which attracted attention from the general public and students from different institutions.
The ‘Balochistan Kitaab Karwaan’ is an ongoing initiative by the BSAC, striving to instill a culture of book reading in Balochistan. The student organization has been actively arranging these book fairs in various educational institutions across the region, aiming to ignite a passion for books and knowledge among students.
