Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has accused Afghan nationals residing in Pakistan of involvement in illegal business activities and land encroachments across the country. During a program on a private Pakistani television channel, he highlighted concerns about the presence of Afghan citizens in various illegal enterprises that are impacting national security and economic stability.
He specifically mentioned a canal where he often swims, claiming it has been encroached upon by Afghan nationals. Khawaja Asif stated that dump trucks owned by Afghans living in temporary shelters are parked along the canal, which he alleged has been illegally occupied and encroached upon for irrigation purposes. This, he argued, is part of a broader pattern of illegal land grabbing by Afghan residents.
The Defence Minister further claimed that these Afghan landowners might be bribing officials within the Irrigation Department to facilitate their illegal activities. He asserted that all illegal businesses operating in Pakistan are run by Afghan nationals, and that their encroachment along canal banks is a significant concern for national sovereignty and resource management.
Khawaja Asif estimated that around six to seven million undocumented individuals currently reside in Pakistan. He suggested that if these Afghan nationals were repatriated, it would create employment opportunities for Pakistani citizens, thereby benefiting the local economy and reducing illegal employment.
On foreign relations, Asif remarked that Pakistan currently maintains positive ties with the United States. However, he pointed out that unlike in the past, these relations are no longer based on joint military ventures, indicating a shift in strategic priorities and diplomatic engagement.
Addressing the ongoing water dispute with India, Khawaja Asif reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance, stating that international support remains with Pakistan’s position. He emphasized that global institutions have made clear that the Indus Waters Treaty cannot be unilaterally suspended, underscoring Pakistan’s firm stance on water rights and sovereignty.
