The security situation in Balochistan has become a major obstacle for Chinese investment projects in the region. In June 2026, Saindak Metals Limited issued a warning to Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy, highlighting that worsening conditions were disrupting the transportation of vital supplies. The company warned that if the situation did not improve within a month, the Saindak Copper-Gold Project might be forced to suspend operations altogether.
According to a report by the Financial Times, the managing director of Saindak Metals Limited wrote to the Pakistani authorities on 29 June, emphasizing how the deteriorating environment in Balochistan had severely impacted the delivery of essential materials needed for the project. The letter, which had not been previously made public, underscored the seriousness of the disruptions caused by ongoing security issues.
The letter warned that continued instability could make it increasingly difficult to sustain uninterrupted operations at the Saindak Copper-Gold Project. It pointed out that the lack of transportation and logistical support could pose a serious risk of project suspension within the next month if conditions did not improve. This highlighted the critical link between regional security and the viability of ongoing development efforts.
Recent security operations by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) have further exacerbated the situation. The group has claimed control over several highways across Balochistan and has established roadblocks, describing these actions as part of an “economic blockade.” Their stated aim is to disrupt mineral transportation, commercial activities, and state supply routes, thereby weakening the region’s economic stability.
These actions have severely impacted transportation networks, with attacks on highways causing delays and cancellations. Many transport companies are now reducing their operations or avoiding risky routes altogether due to the increased threat. As a result, the timely delivery of raw materials and critical supplies for ongoing projects has become increasingly difficult, threatening operational continuity.
China, the largest foreign investor in Balochistan through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), faces mounting risks amid the security crisis. Over the past decade, billions of dollars have been invested in projects such as Gwadar Port, the Saindak Copper-Gold Project, the Reko Diq mining venture, and various energy and infrastructure schemes. The deteriorating security environment has raised concerns about the safety of Chinese nationals working in the region.
In recent years, there have been multiple attacks targeting Chinese engineers, technical experts, and their convoys in Balochistan. These incidents have prompted Chinese authorities to call on the Pakistani government to take more effective measures to protect Chinese nationals. The ongoing violence and instability continue to threaten the future of Chinese investments in the region and undermine efforts to develop Balochistan’s economic potential.
