The victim, identified as Usman Maqbool, was discovered in the Pidrak area after being missing for several months. According to reports, his mutilated body bore signs of brutal torture, highlighting the violent methods used in enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings prevalent in the region.
Usman Maqbool was allegedly abducted from Turbat on August 24. This incident is part of a troubling pattern of enforced disappearances in Balochistan, where many individuals vanish without official explanation. A day prior to the discovery of his body, The Balochistan Post had reported on his case, along with two other similar disappearances in Karachi and Kech, emphasizing the widespread nature of this human rights crisis.
The case is further compounded by Maqbool’s previous detention, as he was abducted in 2019 from the same area and released after nearly two years in 2021. His detention and subsequent death have yet to be addressed by Pakistani authorities, who have not issued any official statement or taken visible steps towards accountability. The lack of transparency has fueled concerns about impunity and the continued abuse of human rights in the region.
Balochistan has long been a hotspot for human rights violations, with international organizations documenting numerous cases of enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial killings. Baloch activists and rights groups accuse the Pakistani state of engaging in systematic violence and collective punishment aimed at suppressing the nationalist movement. The ongoing violence has created a climate of fear and impunity in the region, affecting countless families.
Despite mounting criticism from domestic and international actors, Pakistani institutions have largely remained silent or unresponsive. Investigations into these cases are rare, and when they do occur, they seldom lead to prosecutions. Families of victims often face harassment and intimidation in their efforts to seek justice, further entrenching a cycle of repression and impunity in Balochistan.
