On the first day of Eid al-Fitr, as people across the Muslim world celebrated, Balochistan witnessed a different scene: protests and rallies against forced disappearances and state oppression erupted. Organized by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee and Voice for Baloch Missing Persons, thousands gathered in small and large cities, including Karachi, demanding the recovery of missing persons and an end to enforced disappearances.
Addressing a protest rally in Quetta, Vice Chairman of Voice for Baloch Missing Persons, Mama Qadeer Baloch, denounced the government’s claims, stating that thousands are missing in Balochistan. Mama Qadeer emphasized that the agony of enforced disappearances is felt deeply by those with missing loved ones, urging for their presentation in courts.
Dr. Mahrang Baloch, leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, criticized state institutions for their lack of seriousness in addressing forced disappearances. She lamented the increasing number of disappearances and extrajudicial killings of Baloch individuals. Dr. Mahrang Baloch underscored the emotional toll on families of the missing, accusing authorities of exacerbating the issue instead of resolving it.
Speaking at a Karachi rally, VBMP General Secretary, Sammi Deen Baloch highlighted the somber reality faced by families of the missing, who spend Eid in anguish instead of celebration. She condemned the government’s apathy towards their plight, citing recent extrajudicial killings in Karachi as evidence. Sammi stressed that democratic protests have yielded no results, leaving families in perpetual grief.
Protests were not confined to Quetta and Karachi; cities across Balochistan, including Turbat, Khuzdar, and Gwadar, witnessed rallies demanding justice for the missing. Participants carried portraits of the disappeared and placards condemning state oppression and calling for their recovery. Families appealed to state authorities to reveal the whereabouts of their loved ones and ensure their fair trial in established courts.
