Baloch Voice for Justice strongly condemns the statement made by Pakistan Army spokesperson Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif on Tuesday regarding the issue of missing persons. The Baloch Voice for Justice notes that such statements are deplorable and indicate impunity.
Speaking about the issue of missing persons, the military spokesperson stated that it is very complicated, adding that the names of some terrorists killed in encounters were also included in the list of disappeared people.
“How does it happen that the names of those who illegally migrated to other countries and are working with Taliban or Baloch insurgent groups in Afghanistan have been added to the list?” he said during a press conference in the garrison city of Rawalpindi on Tuesday.
Responding to his statement, a spokesperson for the Baloch Voice for Justice said such statements are a serious affront to Pakistan’s rule of law and civil liberties.
“The statement made by the general is a repetition of the same old narrative we have been hearing since the issue of missing persons emerged in the early 2000s. These statements pose a threat to the rule of law and signal that law enforcement agencies will continue to disappear rights activists, critical voices, and suspected militants, only to claim later they have crossed the border or joined armed groups,” the spokesperson for Baloch Voice for Justice said in a statement.
“We demand the formation of an independent body with the necessary powers and resources to investigate, with members from rights groups such as the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Amnesty International, the Judiciary, and family members of missing persons, to determine who crossed the border and migrated to another country and when. We also call on authorities to make the findings of the investigation public,” the statement reads.
The Baloch Voice for Justice also reiterates its demand that all complaints and reports of enforced disappearances be promptly, impartially, and effectively investigated and those behind enforced disappearances are held to account.
