On November 27, 2024, the family of Dil Jan Baloch and the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) conducted a seminar during their ongoing sit-in protest in Awaran, advocating for the safe recovery of Dil Jan, who has been forcibly disappeared since June 22, 2024.
The family has been demonstrating for over a week, persistently calling for Dil Jan’s safe return. However, their peaceful protest has faced escalating harassment from paramilitary forces and local authorities. Despite receiving threats and facing pressure from the Frontier Corps (FC) and district administration to abandon their demonstration, the family and their supporters remain resolute in their stance.
The seminar provided a crucial platform to highlight the flagrant human rights violations against the Baloch people, notably the distressing issue of enforced disappearances. Among the speakers were Sammi Deen Baloch, a BYC leader and members of Dil Jan Baloch’s family, who condemned the state’s failure to honor its commitments. They recalled an earlier assurance from the district administration, promising to secure Dil Jan’s release if the family called off their protest. Trusting this promise, the family had ended their demonstration, only to find Dil Jan still missing—intensifying their feelings of betrayal.
Tensions escalated when the FC reportedly obstructed all transportation routes to the sit-in site the night prior to the seminar, threatening drivers and hindering access for supporters. Undeterred, dozens of individuals walked for hours to show solidarity with the family.
During the seminar, speakers vehemently denounced the state’s ongoing repression of the Baloch people, addressing issues such as forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and the return of mutilated bodies. They emphasized the enduring suffering of the Baloch community and the persistent cycle of violence and neglect perpetrated by the state.
In a powerful statement, Sammi Deen Baloch reaffirmed the unwavering resolve of the Baloch people, asserting, “Harassment, threats and blockades will not break our spirit. We will continue to demand justice for Dil Jan Baloch and for all those who have been disappeared by the state.”
The seminar concluded with a strong message of defiance, emphasizing that the quest for justice and human rights by the Baloch people will not be silenced by intimidation or oppression. The sit-in protest in Awaran remains ongoing, with the BYC vowing to sustain pressure on the authorities until Dil Jan Baloch is safely recovered.
Local and international human rights organizations have expressed escalating concern over the rising harassment faced by peaceful protestors in Balochistan. They are calling for immediate action to address the growing phenomenon of enforced disappearances and the ongoing suppression of dissent.
