The Pakistani government has approved an additional Rs60 billion for military operations in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under “Operation Azm-e-Istehkam.” This decision was made during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Thursday, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb in Islamabad.
An official statement from the Ministry of Finance indicated that the ECC has authorized the immediate release of Rs20 billion for these operations within the current fiscal year, with Rs1.95 billion specifically allocated to the Frontier Corps (FC) Balochistan to bolster security at the Reko Diq mining project. The remaining Rs40 billion will be released in the later half of the fiscal year, primarily aimed at procuring advanced military equipment to enhance the capabilities of security forces.
This funding decision comes in response to escalating security concerns in Balochistan, where separatist groups have increasingly targeted security forces and significant development projects. The Ministry of Finance underscored the urgent need for improved security, notably citing reports of insurgents gaining access to sophisticated weaponry, allegedly left behind by United States forces in Afghanistan.
“Operation Azm-e-Istehkam” was launched on June 21 as part of Pakistan’s broader initiative to combat extremism and terrorism, following a review of the nation’s counter-terrorism strategies under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In reaction to the operation, the Baloch Raaji Aajoi Sangar (BRAS), an umbrella organization representing Baloch pro-independence groups, condemned the initiative. Spokesperson Baloch Khan, claimed that the operation serves as a pretext for escalating military action against the Baloch population. Khan alleged that the operation is motivated by Chinese interests in securing investments in the area, particularly related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
