In a world driven by information, the potential to shape people’s beliefs has never been more potent. When this power is manipulated, it can cause significant harm, and rectifying the deliberate spread of a specific narrative can be costly.

In this age of information, access to knowledge should have brought enlightenment and rational arguments. However, it seems to have degraded the originality of thought. It’s as if we no longer have full control over our perception, as our thoughts are shaped by fabricated statements or content, often adopted without verification.

Even the intelligentsia, intellectuals, and commentators frequently amplify received news or other content without questioning its veracity. The widespread misinformation and the influence of the majority effect leave the general public in a state of confusion, unable to distinguish between falsehood and truth.

In the context of Balochistan, information warfare is used as a tool to alienate the Baloch nation linguistically and religiously, often distancing people from their prominent personalities, driven by state actions. Various state actors target political activists, leaders, and organizations in Balochistan who advocate for human rights and expose violations, while simultaneously propagating the state’s narrative.

A recent example is the fabricated First Information Report (FIR) filed against Mahrang Baloch,accusing her of being a sympathizer of insurgent groups and other terrorist organizations. Thisinstance starkly demonstrates the state’s contempt toward human rights activists fromBalochistan. Furthermore, after being named one of the 100 Next influential emerging leaders,the state, through its cyber team, began spreading baseless propaganda against MahrangBaloch, as well as against other political activists and members of the Baloch YakjehtiCommittee (BYC). Depriving them of their rights to movement and speech is a blatantinfringement of human rights.

Moreover, placing Beebow Baloch’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL) to restrict her travel isanother example of using misinformation as a pretext for the harassment of Baloch activists.

Misinformation regarding Baloch missing persons and activists largely revolves around state-sponsored narratives that label them as terrorists or separatists, distorting the legitimacy oftheir political grievances. Reports from various human rights organizations indicate that state-controlled media often downplays or omits accounts of enforced disappearances. Additionally,fake surrender ceremonies and exaggerated threats of insurgency are employed to justifycrackdowns. Human rights organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch(HRW), which document these abuses, are frequently discredited as tendentious or influencedby foreign agendas. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has also extensivelyreported on enforced disappearances, countering the state’s disinformation tactics.Furthermore, social media platforms are manipulated through disinformation campaigns, asdocumented by organizations like the Digital Rights Foundation, which have exposed onlineefforts to target activists with false accusations. This environment of misinformation continuesto obscure the extent of human rights violations in Balochistan.

The Baloch people must navigate this persistent dilemma until they achieve full autonomy, yet the state remains caught off guard by their unwavering resilience and resistance. Furthermore, the Baloch nation is erudite, having reached a level of consciousness that transcends the expectations set by the state’s orchestrated machinery and propaganda. This consciousness, coupled with their historical struggles, positions them to challenge and dismantle the false narratives perpetuated against them.
