A 25-year-old Baloch student has reportedly disappeared after being detained by security forces in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad. Shayan Mengal, a student at the Federal Medical College, was allegedly taken into custody on 18 June near the Islamabad Toll Plaza. His family claims that no legal warrant was presented at the time of arrest and that authorities have provided no explanation for his detention.
Shayan hails from Qaziabad in Nushki district, Balochistan, and is the son of prominent tribal elder Haji Amir Hamza Mengal. Despite multiple efforts to locate him, family members have not received any confirmation from police or security agencies regarding his whereabouts. They have also visited various police stations and government offices in their search but remain without answers.
The family has appealed to high authorities, including the Chief Justice of Pakistan, the Prime Minister, and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), to intervene and secure Shayan’s immediate release. Their plea underscores growing concern over enforced disappearances and the lack of transparency surrounding these cases.
This incident is part of a broader pattern of enforced disappearances affecting the Baloch community. The Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) reported additional cases of disappearances this week, highlighting the ongoing crisis. Two more families have submitted testimonies to the organization, raising alarm over the systematic nature of these detentions.
One such case involves Syed Anas Shah, a college student from Kalat, who was reportedly detained on 13 June while traveling with his family. According to his brother, their vehicle was stopped by personnel from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) at Khadkucha in Mastung, and Anas was taken away “for investigation.” Since then, he has not been heard from, intensifying fears about his fate.
Another case concerns Suhail Ahmed, a shopkeeper from Kharan who rents out audio equipment for weddings. He was allegedly abducted by CTD personnel from Qilla Chowk Bazaar on the night of 12 June. His family states that he was taken without a warrant and has been missing for over a week, raising further concerns about extrajudicial arrests.
Voicing strong condemnation, VBMP Chairman Nasrullah Baloch described these incidents as “extra-constitutional arrests” that are tearing families apart. He called on the government to take urgent action to end these enforced disappearances and to uphold human rights, emphasizing the psychological and emotional toll on the victims’ families.
