After the 2013 earthquake in Mashkay, Balochistan, the region is still grappling with a severe educational setback. According to a statement by the Mashkay Civil Society, more than 50 schools remain closed, contributing to a significant decline in education in the area.
The earthquake, which occurred on September 24, 2013, caused extensive damage to the educational infrastructure in Mashkay. The society’s statement highlights that the absence of functional school buildings has led to some spaces being taken over by livestock, symbolizing the educational challenges faced by the community.
Despite initial efforts to restore the educational system in the aftermath of the earthquake, progress has been slow. Many teachers from the region have relocated to urban centers like Hub, Karachi, and Quetta. While this may have been advantageous for individual careers, it has created a void, affecting the education of more than 2,000 students.
The statement criticizes the district administration for its perceived lack of commitment to education. Despite various outreach efforts, including campaigns on social media platforms like X, local authorities have failed to take substantial action to rehabilitate the schools. Specific areas, including Nokjo and Gorakai, are mentioned where schools remain non-operational.
