Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), Pakistan’s leading exploration and production firm, has announced the commissioning of its Jhal Magsi Development Project in Balochistan. The company disclosed this development through a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Monday, highlighting the project’s completion and operational status.
The Jhal Magsi Development Project is situated in the remote district of Jhal Magsi in Balochistan. According to the company’s statement, the facility is expected to produce approximately 14 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of natural gas and around 45 barrels of oil daily. This marks a significant addition to the region’s energy infrastructure and resource extraction efforts.
A key component of the project’s infrastructure is a 98-kilometre pipeline laid by Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), which connects Jhal Magsi to the national gas grid. This pipeline ensures that the gas produced at the site will be integrated into Pakistan’s broader energy network, supporting national energy needs and supply stability.
The development initiative officially began in February 2024 after receiving government approval and incentives, reflecting a collaborative effort between public authorities and the private sector. The Jhal Magsi field comprises two wells and operates as a joint venture, demonstrating the joint participation of various stakeholders in resource extraction activities in Balochistan.
Officials have expressed optimism that the project will bolster Pakistan’s energy sector by increasing domestic production and reducing reliance on imported fuels. They see the development as a step toward energy self-sufficiency and economic growth, particularly in the context of regional development.
However, the project has sparked controversy among political parties and rights groups in Balochistan. Critics argue that despite the region’s rich resource potential, local communities continue to face poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment. Many believe that resource projects like Jhal Magsi often benefit external entities and the national economy more than the local population.
The inauguration of the project has reignited longstanding debates over whether Balochistan’s natural wealth will translate into tangible benefits for its residents. Opponents contend that such initiatives are often carried out without adequate community consent and primarily serve national interests, leaving the region marginalized and underdeveloped despite its resource wealth.
